BMSA’s Toolbox Talk Safety Program FAQs
What is the Toolbox Talk Safety Program?
BMSA’s Toolbox Talk Safety Program is a packet of 12 Industry specific handouts that are intended to assist LBM employers in developing a safety training program or to supplement an already robust
training program. A new series of 12 Toolbox Talk handouts will be available each year.
Where does the information come from?
Many resources including the OSHA website, safety training courses and publications, and
recent webinars.
Who created this program?
Barb Strickland RN, SSH, BMSA’s safety specialist.
I’m considering ordering, but don’t really understand how to use the program.
I’m so glad you asked! This program was designed with you in mind!! It’s simple, straight forward, and created to meet your needs whether you already have a robust safety program or are just getting started.
Let’s talk about the pieces and parts…
1. Sign in sheet:
  • Document who participated in your safety meeting.
  • Outlines your meeting and encourages you to talk about:
  • Any accidents or near misses.
  • Review/discussion of Toolbox Talk handout.
  • Needed equipment repairs.
2. Manager instruction/resource page:
  • Not all Toolbox topics include a manager resource page---only those that have corresponding federal regulations.
  • This information is for the LEADER, not to be handed out to the attendees.
3. 1-page Toolbox Talk Handout:
  • 12 different handouts covering a myriad of topics specific to the LBM industry.
  • There are a lot of pictures…on purpose! We tend to remember better when we see pictures instead of just the written word. Pictures are also beneficial for employees with barriers to written language.
  • The handouts can be used in multiple different ways…
  • Pass out copies and discuss during a safety meeting.
  • Put a new topic outside your office each month and let the staff be responsible for grabbing one.
  • Email them to employees who have computer access (they don’t work well on phones).
4. Binder:
  • Use the binder to keep track of monthly safety training. Include the sign in sheet and a copy of the Toolbox Talk Handout.
Do they have to be used in the order that you sent them to us (Jan through Dec)?
Absolutely not!! Many of the topics relate to national observances such as Forklift Safety which was created for June, which is Forklift Safety Month. You’ll find the topic of cold weather stress in January, and so on… You don’t have to use them that way, which is why they don’t have the month on the actual Toolbox Talk Handout. If you’ve just had a “near miss” forklift accident in February use that Toolbox Talk Handout in February instead of June.

SBA and Treasury Department Release Simpler PPP Loan Forgiveness Application
The Small Business Administration (SBA) and Treasury Department released a simpler loan forgiveness application form for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans of $50,000 or less. The new application attempts to streamline the PPP loan forgiveness process and provide administrative relief to small businesses.
 
Borrowers that use the new application form are exempt from reductions in the borrower’s loan forgiveness amount based on reductions in full-time equivalent (FTE) employees or reductions in employee salary or wages. The new form also does not require borrowers to show the calculations used to determine their loan forgiveness amount. However, SBA may request information and documents to review those calculations as part of its loan review process.
