This course is designed as a three-day hybrid class combining BMSA’s Introduction to Building Material Sales and Basic Blueprint Reading & Takeoff classes with a new emphasis on millwork calculations.
Attendees will receive hands-on experience with an actual set of working drawings.

Topics Covered:
Day One
- Fundamentals to prepare for completing a takeoff.
- Building material math and terminology
- Material basics including lumber, engineered wood, structural panels, composites, and treated wood.
- Blueprint reading, interpreting plan views, lines, dimensions, and symbols.
- Using architectural and layout scales.
- Applying the skills to a simple deck project
Days Two and Three
- Introduction to various residential construction methods and estimating formulas.
- Developing a material list from a house plan.
- Rough framing including floors, walls, and roofs (trussed and stick frame).
- Siding, soffit, and roofing materials.
- Additional attention to millwork including windows, doors, moldings, and stair parts.
Instructor:
Casey Voorhees is the Executive Director of the Western Building Materials Association. In addition to having started his career in his family’s lumber yard, he has over 30 years of experience teaching LBM basics and estimating classes within our industry. Casey not only has immense knowledge to share, but he is also a gifted, patient, engaging teacher who continually updates his course offerings to ensure our Dealers are keeping up with current trends and developments.
