Safety On The Loading Dock: A Look At The Hazards And How To Mitigate Them
Loading docks are one of the nation’s key points of commerce – and perhaps one of its most unsung. In 2018, this part of the U.S. freight network handled an estimated 18.6 billion tons of goods worth nearly $19 trillion, according the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
That same year, nearly 6,600 people missed work because of injuries and illnesses incurred on loading docks, dock plates and ramps. That’s the highest number since the Bureau of Labor Statistics adopted its current method for classifying the sources of injuries and illnesses in 2011.
So, how can employers keep loading dock workers safe?
Here are some key points to think about.
  • Employers should develop traffic control plans for inside and outside a facility. They should also take steps to help prevent drive-aways and “trailer creep,” which occurs when a trailer moves away from the dock door or opening, creating a gap that workers or equipment can fall through.
  • Dock edges should be marked with visual warnings so workers and equipment don’t fall off. Guardrails, visual barriers or other safety measures can help protect workers and forklift operators from falling off docks.

Department of Transportation Announces New Custody and Control Form
On August 30, 2020, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that the revised Federal Drug Testing and Custody and Control Form (CCF) was approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). While the “old” CCF can be used until August 30, 2021, the new CCF is approved for use as of September 1, 2020. You can download a PDF version of the new CCF.
One of the updates in the new CCF is the addition of “CDL State and no.” to the line that captures donor identification information. Including a driver’s commercial driver’s license (CDL) number and State of issuance here for all FMCSA-regulated tests will greatly assist medical review officers (MROs) in reporting drug and alcohol violations in the Clearinghouse.

Emergency Preparedness and Response
Emergencies can create a variety of hazards for workers in the impacted area. Preparing before an emergency occurs plays a vital role in ensuring that everyone has the necessary equipment, knows where to go, and how to keep themselves safe when there is an actual emergency.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) website provides Emergency Preparedness and Response pages with information on how to prepare and train for emergencies and the hazards to be aware of when an emergency occurs. The pages provide information for employers and workers across industries, and for workers who will be responding to the emergency.
